I have a few surplus pumpkins left unsold. Has anyone any experience/advice as to whether they would be suitable to feed to cattle/sheep, and in what form (i.e. cut in chunks/pureed/cooked)? I have googled this and have found some vague references to them as an old fashioned cattle feed, but not in any detail.

Hi Jean,

Although not having fed pumpkins to cattle we did have a cow who got a pear caught in her throat once, and it took the vet to get it shifted.

I know our neighbour feeds his cattle (brahman) bush lemons and other fruit, but ours turn their noses up, so they may not even like it.

Now me, I'd cut it up and make loads of pumpkin soup... either freeze it or can it. :;):

Hi Vicky and Stew,

Will chop them into small bits and see if they are interested, I am sure Primrose will be, she will eat anything!!

As for pumpkins for human consumption, I have to concede that I have grown them for more years than I care to remember, ever since I was a little girl, and as much as i still enjoy growing them, trust me I have tried every way of cooking them, and I still find them somewhere between tasteless and disgusting!! Am I doing it wrong??

Hi Jean,

I think there's something with different nationalities and pumpkin.

I've grown up eating them, as have most Aussies but it seems the US use for Halloween and the UK from all my UK friends over the years use for pig feed.

Oh, or as a pumpkin pie!

It could be the type of pumpkin as well, I prefer a good old Queensland Blue and homegrown is best.

And although my Mum used to mash it, bake it etc I like baked and left over baked on pizza.

Sometimes I cut thinly with potatoes and DH puts it on the BBQ with some sliced zucchini and eggplant... if it's a veggie BBQ.

Couldn't edit my previous post so this is an addendum.

I was reminded last night about pumpkin soup!!

I can (in a jar with pressure cooker) pumpkin soup but you can also make up and freeze, then it's an easy lunch on a cold day with crusty bread.
