I've created my own web site and below is a link into it. As I've not done one before, there is plenty of scope for improvement. Constructive feedback welcome.

Congratulations Colin. My sister made one for us 3 or 4 months ago. I hope to improve on the photos when the kids come home with their expertise and fancy cameras, but meanwhile it's been lots of fun.
I was amazed when I had a look at 'hits' in the stats. People from all the strangest remotest places in the world have had a look at ours. A bit spooky really.

Well done Colin, to do your own site is a huge learning curve. It looks good. The most difficult aspect I found when I started was just getting to grips with the terminology which can be weird!
Many thanks for the links to www.dexterbeefonline.co.uk and www.grassfed.co.uk, much appreciated.

Hi Colin
Site looks great! I love all the photos.
Just had a thought about the homepage that maybe you should mention your beef on it. Even though you don't do a lot, people will still want to know if you do. You could put something like. For more information on our Dexter Beef click here (with a link to the Beef page). Also a link from the headline on the Latest News section to the beef page would be useful (got to make it easy for people to find the info they want!)
Also, it might be worth making some of the text on each page bold, e.g wherever you mention Dexters, Dexter Cattle, or Dexter Beef - this makes it easy for readers to see at a glance what the page is about and also makes it search engine friendly.
The only other thing I thought was on the contact us page - I am always happier about a site when there is the name, phone number and address of a real person. This will be more important when you have more beef to sell but it might be worth adding these to increase people's confidence about the site and your beef.
Hope that helps!
Caroline

With what Caroline has said, every time you put a link on a page to another page, it also gets picked up by Goggle and other search engines which improves your position in search engine results (eventually, it takes a long time).
So if you said in your blurb "Our beef is fantastic" for example, then by changing the word "beef" to a hyperlink so it typically might look like "Our beef is fantastic", (it doesn't have to be an underscored) that will help your ranking as well as help people find your beef page.
And if you want search engine placings, change the opening words to get an immediate message across. So if Dexter are your main thing, or the beef, get that right up front and then go on about the farm etc.

Hi Colin,
Well done, I found it informative and well laid out.
Agree with Caroline about contact details, people are unsure if they don't know it's a 'real person' and agree with Clive in saying:
"then by changing the word "beef" to a hyperlink so it typically might look like "Our beef is" with a small difference, make the link dexter beef and link to your beef page.
Google follows 'anchor text' links from words, hence try not to put 'click here' as it's meaningless to google and other search engines. All links from your homepage should go into pages on your site not jump outside the site.
And you're 'relevant' now google looks a relevancy!
Just on the anchor text, this may allow the 'penny to drop' some years ago if you put the words 'miserable failure' into google number one listing was to George Bush's Bio... because people all over the world linked the words 'miserable failure' to it.
I get asked a lot about ranking in search engines, so I hope this helps you.
:D
