Dexters for sale at York tomorrow

Below copied from an email I received from york market auctioneers.

There is a dispersal sale on Thursday 30th October on behalf of Hunter House Farms starting at 11:30 with the cows comprising briefly of the following:

8 Dexter Cows with 3 to 6 month old calves at foot
1 Dexter heifer running with the bull and due to calve January
1 two year old Bull which has been running with the cows since calving

94 British Toggenburg and British Saanen Goats comprising
39 milking goats 33 third lactation and 6 4th lactation or over
20 goatlings
35 goat kids born May to June 2008

May be of interest to some of our readers.

All the goats are now withdrawn.
I just bought some nice cheeses from this company last week!

They purchased 4 dexters off me with the intention of milking them and making dexter cheese,I have tried several times to get in touch with no luck obviously things have not worked out which is a shame. They also used to milk sheep and make cheese from them.

The auctioneers didnt have any details other than the email above but they were all registered. If they are selling the four off me they are as follows
Red non short 2000 born cow Chestnut Ginger a good cow, the others were home bred Smallwood black Zoe 2003 non short but small sold 2yrs ago as incalf to second calf quiet,the other two were sold as incalf heifers black non short Smallwood black Kelsey and Smallwood Black Olive both 2004 born. Kelsey mother had to be put down at 12 due to prolapse but had been a regular breeder until then and Olive mum is still with me and is the grand daughter to the first dexter I owned.
I believe the others came from Staffordshire as well and at least one was red.
If any one goes I should be interested to see what they make

Black cows £230 & £220
Red cows £300, £300 & £380
Heifer £140
Bull £290

I believe all cows had calves with them.

Sold by lot number, auctioneers dont seem to have had any age/pedigree status available.

Red cow 2/5/00 with female calf 8/6/08 £300
Red cow 7/5/06 with female calf 10/9/08 £380
Red cow 29/6/02 with male calf £15/6/08 £300
Black cow 24/8/04 with male calf 26/5/08 £220
Heifer (possibly in calf 20m29d £140
Bull 24m 8d £290

I am guessing that last two are age in month & days

I have just come onto the discussion board with a veiw to finding information on a particular subject, only to find speculation as to what is/has happened to my herd of Dexters and the cheese making! Whilst it is my business only, I will update.
The Dexter herd was at 26 and I had deceided to sell some of the Dexter off for many and varied reasons, but of the 4 cows purchased from Monica, I still have Kelsey and Zoe. With regards to the goats that were to go to auction they were part of 160 milking goats I have and the ones entered were withdrawn as sold to a priavte buyer to make way for improved milking stock that I am currently purchasing along with more Dexters for milking. The sheep are still on my farm and increasing each year, but currently I have a milking flock of approx 230 British Milksheep and 60 poll Dorsets.
The cheese making, which my wife Laura does is going well and she entered a goats brie cheese named 'Bronnie' into the 2008 World Cheese Awards and won a bronze medal. In the 2009 awards she will be entering the Dexter brie she produces called 'Kelsey' and a ewes brie called 'April' - watch this space, as they say!

So to conclude, it has all worked out, we are still making cheeses and looking to buy more stock.

HELLO Simon,
Glad to hear from you and that you still have two of my cows, and that you are going to call a cheese after one of them- is she your favourite.Hope you didnt mind me putting their details on the site but I thought it might help to sell them.
I am sure everyone would like to know how you get on milking them and if you have any cheese to sell you have probably got a ready market on this website
If you have read the posts on the price of books on this site Im sure you could do very well if you wanted to write a book on the subject.

I have tried several of the cheeses bought at a shop in Barnard Castle and I think Durham market from Teesdale game . The Brie was outstanding, but the others were excellent as well.
