I'm sat here in a place in Shropshire UK which has the coldest recorded temperature ever in England apparently, it's January (mid-winter), it should be minus 5, but instead it's plus 10 and midges and all sorts are hatching! Hope the BT vaccine's on the way in a hurry.

Our farm is between 600 and 800 feet in South West Wales, the primroses have been out since before Christmas and the daffodils are about 4" up. Although grass is looking a bit scarce, what is there still looks green and appears to be still growing (slowly) in the ungrazed areas. And yes there are clouds of black midges hovering as you walk up the track. The last few days have been dry and Springlike after weeks of what seemed to be solid rain which will probably be back in a day or two so I'm making the most of it. Which reminds me, must look to see if there is any frogspawn in the ponds.

When I noticed my 3 lay down yesterday, I thought perhaps it was going to rain - then I realised they were simply enjoying a sunbathe in January!

Sorry its not a technically great pic, I don't have a long lens - wouldn't know how to use it anyway and you wouldn't have wanted me to disturb them now would you, they look sooo comfortable.

Clive - I think the "all sorts" have hatched. Heard on the news this morning there is a suspected case of BT in Shropshire! Let's hope we have some bitterly cold weather in the next week or two!

They have just announced the tests for bluetongue in North Shropshire are negative. Phew! (for now!).

Hi everyone
We are in south derbyshire the weather here is also very warm i was mowing the lawn on sunday in my t shirt, it needed doing again after it was cut christmas week. We are on heavy clay here and the fields are dry enough to roll and chain harrow apart from two wet patches, i might get this done at the weekend if it stays dry as forcasted, saves me a job in the spring. The horses have been turned out all winter and i given them a slice of hay each twice and they turned their noses up at it.
Regards Ian Hornsby
