I don't keep Dexters anymore, I keep a local breed that makes my management easier. Anyway, I had the same dilema. What I have done is a bull share agreament with another breeder, which can work if you pick the right person. We are both in the Biobest scheme and have gold standard, we are free from...

The cow I have that I mentioned above started to get uncomfortable and was not eating as the rest of the herd. She began to lose condition and I had to puncture her to release the gas, anyway she did not seem to improve as within a couple of days she was exactly the same. I had a bottle of Burp tha...

Take them off, they are horrid weapons against man and beast! I would rather any confrontations with an angry cow be with an unarmed one, not that I have angry cows but even the most placid can be protective of a young calf. How would you feel if those horns damaged one of your children/grandchildr...

I have a cow that looks like she's expecting quads even though she has a 4 month calf at foot. I asked the breeder about her and she just said 'just like her mother'. Although she is huge and has been for the last couple of weeks I have given her no treatment. She blows up whilst grazing and reduce...

All mine had their Blue Tongue vacs last weekend, turned out today, cant come back in at night as they are now about one and a half miles away. They are marking the ground a bit as it is still wetter than I would like but I have no choice as I have run out of fodder and bedding and I am not prepare...

Had the vet in yesterday to do a herd health plan which is a part of the health scheme that I have just joined. When I told him that I worm twice a year he told me that I am wasting my money and should only worm youngstock in their first year at grass. As cows get older they should gain a level of ...

At the last Sussex AGM questions where asked ref articles like the ones on the site. It transpires that articles are sent in to different magazines on a regular basis, the problem is it is up to the magazine as to whether they are published or not.

My vet does not like using calf crushes for any task. when de-horning we just put a halter on and tie the calf tight to a gate and hold on tight. did my Sussex calves like this last year one of which was 6 months old and quite a big lad. The only time I have left males entire until they where 6 to ...

My understanding is yes you cannot use that trailer unless you change the rating to correspond with what your truck is legally allowed to tow. I may be wrong but that is what I was told by someone who is a lot more knowledgeable on the subject than me.

Louisa you can find out both from the manufacturer. There is normally a plate on the trailer, Ivor Williams is on the draw bar. Basically if the towing vehicle can tow 3 tons then your trailer plate should have a figure of 3 tons or less, it must NOT be more.

Problem is Stephanie that if you want a bull you are almost certain to get a heifer, sods law I'm afraid. There seems to be a lot of it about in the stock breeding world!
But it is worth a try.

I think the main problem is if your trailer is rated at more than your towing vehicle is allowed to tow. If your trailer is rated at 3500kg and your vehicle is only allowed to tow 2800kg then you are breaking the law whether the trailer is empty or full. You can fit a second plate with 2800kg and y...
