It really does depend entirely upon how much sausage you are wanting to make. What sort of quantities are you looking at?

I've always believed that you couldn't overfeed cows on hay and sileage and that you only got problems if feeding nuts etc. I always give mine as much as they want (sileage) and have never had problems. Mind you, they are outside all Winter so that might help. After all, how do you ration them in t...

Then how about some commonsense commercial sense? I've said it before, and I'll say it again (and again and again!!) Running any society is a matter of applying some simple principles: 1. You encourage people to join 2. You serve the members It doesn't matter whether it's a book club or a cattle so...

Don't know where you are, but think about Penrith Show, also Westmorland Show. You might be able to walk them there! Actually, you will probably eventually need to move the animals around. You may want to take them to a bull, or to the butchers. And you may want to take them to sales or purchase fu...

I absolutely agree with Clive on thr overage fees and the high price (and complexity) of bull registration. I don't know where I'm going to find a bull this Summer and if I can't find one locally then I may follow Clive and go "unregistered" I wrote to the steering committee months ago ma...

Yes, but the Dexter is currently recognised as a Dairy breed. Check out the Royal Show etc. I'm not sure that there is a Dual Purpose class?

Unless someone knows different?

There's also the vexed question of Dexters being judged as a dairy breed rather than a beef animal. This introduces all kinds of complications. My opinion: We should move to a point when shorts are not allowed to enter competitions. Perhaps that point might be as much as 10 years away - but if we d...

I wonder if anyone sees a link with this discussion and the recent discussions in the Kennel Club?

But where do we go from here? Surely it's time that the DCS stopped actively encouraging carrier animals by favouring them in the judging ring?

You know, anyone outside the Society, reading thgrough this discussion, would find it very hard to take this breed seriously. The Dexter will never make progress as a breed until we stop accepting animals with an abnormality - albeit one which makes them "cute". One day, one of the Nation...

These things aren't easy, and I'll avoid getting into the financial affairs discussion - but I do feel that the most important thing is to make life a little easier for members. Can we PLEASE review the "over age" fees for females? Why do we need these? How is it more costly to register a...

Yes, I'll take him and get the £225 - but he would make a great bull at this price if someone has a number of cows to serve over the next couple of years. He's on the sale site and is called High Cark Hamish.
