Re: T.B test
I got the letter from XL. You do not have to go along with the XL registered vets. I am continuing with my current vet, but it has been a complicated process to get this sorted. I also have to agree to pay for all government required testing, whether it is TB, brucellosis, or an outbreak of anything...

Short legged starter herd
I have submitted an advert but thought I would mention here where it is easier to explain that due to my travel commitments I am having to downsize further and therefore have identified groups in my herd which could be sold together. One such group would make an ideal starter herd for anyone who is ...

Re: Covers for outside ring feeders
These are circular PVC covers I am talking about, secured by bungees through eyelets. I just undo one side and fold back before going into the field with the bale, so I can drop the bale in quickly, then get out of the tractor to flip the cover back over the new bale and secure again. Works well, bu...

Cows for sale in North Yorkshire
I will add these properly, with photos soon, but will mention that I have a few friendly cows and heifers for sale and also know of a few more in the region looking for good happy homes. Some of them would be ideal for people just starting up their Dexter herds, and I have one or two small non-short...

Covers for outside ring feeders
Am I the only one who likes to protect my bales in the ring feeders located outside? I hate seeing good bales getting a thorough soaking, and try to cover them with various things to help keep them in a decent state! Over the years I have done several searches and approached different companies with...

Farmers market equipment for sale
I have sent in an advertisement, but thought I would mention that I have a variety of equipment for sale useful for anyone who sells beef from their farm or at markets. There is a mobile display chiller which can be on or off the wheels to be a table top display, top quality; a glass topped freezer ...

Re: Burgers
Hi Dom, I do this quite regularly, seems a shame to put Topside etc into burgers but sales of joints are slow and better to have a turnover than joints in the freezer. I keep all the fillet, sirloin, rump and Rib, and rest is into burgers. Quarter pounders. £1.00 each. As all the good stuff sells so...

Re: Yorkshire show cancelled
Hi Dom, There weren't any Dexters there to be seen anyway, just me trying to promote the breed in the Smallholders marquee! If you want to come across to Easingwold, you can come to see my Dexters before returning to Scotland, and I might be able to arrange a couple more herds for you too if you wis...

The vast percentage of mine have yellow fat. They are only only grass and haylage/silage with a decent clover content. Tend to get a few more with with white fat in the winter months . I find the meat with yellow fat seems to be the best, from the healthiest animals, but I may be wrong .All the dri...

I was sorry not to make it. The cows had kindly agreed not to calve, and I had arranged cover for the shop ( as like Dom, Saturday is the busiest day for selling the beef), then all the electricity failed for the whole farm! As there are fridges and freezers full of beef, that is not good. Turned o...

Dear Jean, so sorry to hear about your tough time. I have a cow called Meggie the Moo, after my lovely little dog Meggie who lost her fight with cancer. I was feeling down a couple of days ago, but got a text off a friend, saying she would win the lottery, buy a couple of farms abroad for our famil...

To my knowledge it is more likely to happen if there is soil in the silage, and wetness too. If you have very stalky bales, it could be that the cattle are getting corneal abrasions ( scratches) which are painful, causes the eye to weep, and can lead to cloudiness of the eye. These generally will r...

I was up last night calving too, and it really was cold. My girl wasn't in any hurry, so I was filling all the barns' water tanks in the middle of the night as all the lagged pipes have frozen despite being surrounded by cattle. Glad I stayed up with her, as it was a solid calf, really tight and ne...
