Bridgehouse Dexters For Sale

I just wanted to put the details together for my herd of Dexters, I am selling all of them, not the fault of anything to do with the breed, but due to other circumstances. They will be greatly missed. I have cows with calves at foot and running with the bull again, two yearlings heifers (registered)...

16 year old cow - time for retirement?

I have a cow born in 1996, now 16 years old. She is in OK shape and condition, however I was just wondering at what point do people generally not put their cows back to the bull? She calved again this year on march 4th, all by herself, and looking after the calf well.

Re: Well!!

Hi Maccbob, I agree with Saffy as a group of Dexters they certainly have their own mind and mine do not herd well, they prefer to follow - and often don't follow when they can sense something is going to happen! They are great fun though, inquisitive, and mine are happy to graze as you walk around t...

Re: Lonely heifer

I had a similar situation with a red heifer. I had her for three years. She was always with the herd in the field, but they would not let her settle to eat at the ring feeder with them. I used to give her a pile of haylage seperately. I had a couple of other reds, but they were strong characters so ...

Re: Selling my own meat

For my first two animals I sent a text/email to all the people in my contacts, and also put a notice up where I work. That did the trick for me. I gave a bit of information about the breed and how they have been reared. I just charged £8 per kilo for mixed boxes that time. It was a price that I felt...

Re: Selling my own meat

I have mine split into 15kg boxes, and the surplus odd bits left I keep or sell individually to those who want to try the meat. I have had up to 130kg off a long leg steer. I prefer to do it this way so the customer knows exactly how much it will cost when they agree to buy some - which is before th...

30 days with a scanner and 6 weeks if by hand only. I think I remember these times right.

Re: Marketing my cattle

Personally from experience I have sold yearlings, in calf heifers, cows with calf at foot..... I find the best return to be meat in the box. Before Christmas I slaughtered two steers and a heifer and cleared £900 after killing and butchering costs on average each animal. Maybe I am lucky with custom...

Re: packaging

I deliver myself but I use polystyrene boxes from JBPackaging online. I used the 'product box' which I manage to get 15kg of meat in, but probably 14kg would fit better for posting purposes. I am not sure of the requirements for posting meat but this is what I used to deliver my meat from butcher to...

TB pre-movement testing

Hi, I am not convinced the answer would be the same if I rang up twice to enquire so thought I would ask your opinions too. My bull has gone out on loan. Last year when he went I contacted animal health to enquire about returning to our premises. I was advised if he returned within the 60 days of th...

Re: Steer prices

I am only in my second year Clive, it will be interesting to see what happens. I have built my customers up but equally do see some have not taken up the offer this year. I do find people commenting on cuts of meat that they would not normally have cooked. Whether that novelty will wear off I do not...

Re: Steer prices

I also registered with Environment health. We got a letter of acknowledgement after a couple of months. Then 12 months later they did a telephone interview with my mother and sent out a letter with about five questions on it. The meat is all packed and refrigerated at the butchers so I just collect ...

Re: Steer prices

I have just slaughtered and sold the beef from two steers and one heifer. I sell the beef in 8kg or 15kg mixed boxes. I find some people just dont have freezer space for the meat in a 15kg box. This year I sold the 15kg box for £10/kg. I sold the 8kg boxes for £11/kg. I sold the smaller boxes higher...

Pre 1996 born animals

I have heard that under licence, in certain circumstances, these animals can be given permission to move holdings. Has anyone any experience with this?
