Hi I firstly I want to thank all of the lovely Dexter Breeders that have shown an interest in my herd. Due to family circumstances I could no longer give the time required for my lovely herd and decided it was time to let someone else enjoy them I took great care when looking for my stock and if Lin...

Re: Linear Classification - Kernow Herd Cornwall
Thank you Steph and Mark. In my excitement your right I got carried away and I have now edited it ! It was a very positive experience for someone, such as myself, who is fairly new to keeping Dexters. I have been fortunate enough to be guided towards good stock and this proved it. Mike who carried o...

Re: Help Please - Calf not standing
Hi thank you for replying. No I'm not a member of a group so this is something I should do. I did contact a Field Advisor when we had the first dead calf as I was uncertain whether to leave the calf with the cow for a while. In answer to the question concerning colostrum, I did not get anywhere near...

Re: Help Please - Calf not standing
Hi a bit more together today. This was the second calf to die in 3 weeks. I know that I need to sit down and have a good look at what went wrong and how to change things. I have been racking my brains to try and think what could have happened and the only two thing I can come up with is that Arnie o...

Re: Help Please - Calf not standing
Hi I have just been out to the stable to try to give her some more colstrum and she began fitting in my arms. I attempted to revive her but sadly she passed away about 20 minutes ago. I am feeling pretty frustrated right now so I'll sign off and speak to you all soon. Thank you for your advice and s...

Re: Help Please - Calf not standing
Thank you for your advice. I have chosen to bottle feed as she can suck really well the only problem is that she prefers to chew the teat and not suck. Do you think she will get better or am I just being too optimistic

Help Please - Calf not standing
Hi everyone I hope you can help with some advice concerning a new born calf that can not stand. Early this morning I found my cow lying down and although I knew she was due to calve I did not for one minute think that she had already given birth! As I approached her I could see that the front of her...

Re: Hire of bull and TB test charge
Hi Clive I agree with you. I asked around and the standard cost was quoted as £25, perhaps the cost has been a standard £25 for years and the increase in costs have not been taken into account. I experienced exactly the same thing with my Gloucester Old Spot boar and in the end it was just not worth...

Hire of bull and TB test charge
Hi everyone, I am desperately trying to get my head around hiring our young red bull Rattycombe Arnold and making a complete hash of it. I have had some phone calls but when I state that the hirer will need to cover the TB test I am told this is unusual. My bull is not due to be tested until Novembe...

Hi Denise I guess it is the buyers responsibility to check information regarding the Dexter being purchased. In my experience of keeping Gloucester Old Spots people want the pigs for different reasons and are not so hung up on the breeding essentals such as myself. What I can't quite get my head ar...

Thank you so much for your reply, this has helped to clarrify a few things. Although I have a micro herd and I am trying to add to the little knowledge I have, I want to start from a point that will add value to my herd and bring long lasting results. I am certain that I will have lots more questio...
