This is what we do as we don't sell large quantities and our customers know us, so they are not bothered that we a...

I'm not sure going organic is something you do for purely financial reasons. We did it because of our wish to farm sustainably. None the less, we find our beef customers are prepared to pay a premium for our meat. Note that we don't sell through the sale yard, but privately. Being organic doesn't n...

The information Australian Dexter breeders were supplied with, regarding the two types of DNA tests for chrondysplasia was, that the second test was for a mutation which appears to come from Meadow Park Charles. Therefore, animals with no Meadow Park Charles in their pedigree, did not require the s...

Thought you might enjoy hearing from the other end of the world on this topic. We have been selling Dexter meat in Oz for several years. Usually beef producers here send their animals to the selling yards and take whatever price is offered on the day by the buyers. As beef is based on volume, volum...

Hi Mark, I have been breeding for polled Dexters for a few years now and while I can generally tell quite early (mostly even at birth) if any animal will be polled, it is not 100 %. When you say a polled "crown", I have found that polled animals can have quite different shaped heads with ...

Hi All, A plug for organic parasite control. We have not "wormed" our Dexters for over 5 years. Instead, we employ a holistic approach to parasite control (note control, not eradication). By having smaller paddocks and rotating the stock around them we are able to reduce reinvestation. We...

Hello All, The eastern parts of Australia, were we live, have been in drought for the past 2-3 years, yet my Dexters have produced 9 heifers from 13 births in 2002-03 and 8 heifers from 11 births in 2003-04. That's 70% heifers in the past two years. Great for my up-grading program. However, as Dunc...

Hi Peter, I agree wholeheartedly that a Dexter with a full set of horns is a magnificent sight, however, I share your reservations about safety for yourself and other animals when dealing with a horned cow. Consequently, we have been breeding polled Dexters for some years now as I find dehorning a ...
