Thank you to everyone who came to the North of England Dexter Group calf show on Sunday at Thirsk. It was a great day - with only one or two novices being dragged round the show ring and one of them was me! Thank you to Ann for all her hard work in organising the show, thank you to Carol fo...

Alan, We were at the meeting and I'm pretty sure we filled in a registration form for the beef scheme at the meeting - or am I imagining it and we were told to take the forms home, fill them in, and return them? Or was the only form the one currently on the DCS website? Didn't want to duplicate wor...

Hi Cyndy I have some notes at home about what we put in boxes when we did our first one in autumn. I'll get them in some kind of order and put them up here. My biggest tip is don't go overboard on selling it! We had 16 customers - 4 for 10kg boxes and 12 for 5kg boxes and it was a bit stressful try...

Thanks for this lovely story Di. (Just having a catch up on the Forum). It really makes you remember why it's worth carting all that water and feed when everything is frozen up. There's nothing nicer than calling the cows in to a bed of fresh straw and watching them settle down for the night. All t...

Hi Jean. That was a sad end to 2009 for you. Thanks for the reminder about the mineral licks ours are almost finished their last one. Going to brave the snow tomorrow and go and get one. Wonder if Richard would let me borrow the tractor to go in?! Think I would feel safer on that than in a car! All...

We have the opportunity to get hold of 5 tonne of Fodder Beet to give the cows as supplementary feed while it's as cold as this. They are getting big round bales of mostly haylage and sometimes hay and come into a shed at night (free to come and go as they please). Any one got any experience of fee...

It was still -10 degrees C at 10.30am this morning in the Vale of York. Must have 8 inches of snow by now and more forecast. Water pipes have been frozen since before Christmas. Cows have a shed they can come in and out of freely and a ring feeder with big bale hay/haylage. They are fine but seem r...

Would definitely recommend public liability insurance - it may always be one of those 'just in case' things but the one time you need it will be the one time you wish you had it - even if the situation wasn't your fault if they are your stock you will be liable and people will sue for anything thes...
