Re: Dexters on countryfile

Thanks Clive I have not really been on this board for a long time. We had a great day with Adfam and crew. Steve uses the sprouter and is delighted with it as He does not have any ground suitable for silage or even hay.It saves him buying in fodder during the winter. It also facilitates outdoor feedi...

Re: Neospora

Hi Inger, To my knowledge the only method of transmission is in utero (vertical) or from dogs .Infection in a bull is of no significance as Neospora seem to have a predilection for the ovaries and thus the repeats abortions etc. I suggest retesting the bull for ease of mind but it is of no veterinar...

Dingle Dexter Beef Company

Hi, Steve Collins and myself have got together to develop and brand beef as Dingle Dexter Beef.We have purchased a bespoke Burger Bar which featured on national TV last evening in "Ear To the Ground" Ireland's answer to Countryfile(but better!) I attach a link to the programme which I hope...

Re: New Start Advice

The ideal butchers animal-and he fact you do not have to winter them a second year makes it great.Did you give them meal?I think you are on a real winner. i think so should say away from he stabiliser as you will have enough maternal traits. Would you chance an easy calving limousin to put a more sh...

Re: Southern Ireland Group

Can someone explain what" Southern Ireland " means? Is it south of a line between Donegal and Galway?
Its a term which frequently confuses me and is rarely if ever used in the Republic of Ireland.

Cheers

Re: Slaugtering a 6 year old cow

There should be no problem killing her as the compulsory bse test now only applies to over 72 months in ROI.Any local abattoir should do the necessary.
Where are you?

Re: Carlisle Sale

I think Clako's comments on the recent article in the Dexter journal are really interesting. The prices of pedigree stock are inadequate in comparassion to commercial cattle particularly given the work involved getting pedigree cattle to show standard.Jacqui Parkes makes a number of pertinent points ...

Its a bit early to call it but the targetting of active farmers could result in an increased demand for dexters.

i get the impression that the suckler cow will be coupled to some form of payment and this should benefit the low maintenance breeds

Larry, I hope to bring in aload in the spring.I priced a lorry from |British midland to Kerry for E3000 and thought it a bit strong.Lorries frequently return empty through the U.K. but to make it economical you would need a load. You are probably in a hurry to get going but if not pm me and we'll s...

I was surprised to see Robs comments but I'm not in a position to disagree but if one were to breed for milk I think production could be ramped up over a few generations.I regret that some many years of potential genetic improvement have been lost. there is a huge move towards new entrants to dairy...

Hi Larry, I am amazed that noone has done this in recent times given the costs associated with carrying freisans etcThe main stream dairy men are crossing back to the channel island breeds to improve milk quality and reduce costs.Unfortunately both the Kerrys and the Dexters have not benefitted fro...
