Has there been any improvement on the calf Louisa. Sorry to say I have never come across it before or heard of it with anyone else (thank God). Will you try and keep it going to see or will you make a decision shortly?

Topic: drinking water - Do your cows lap?

I know it sounds a bit strange but nearly all of my cattle (15), and this only includes those I have seen, drink their water by sticking their tounges in the water and sort of lap it up like a dog. The trouble is a lot of water goes every where and I do wonder if they get enough-- but they are stil...

Clive IMHO there is nothing different to do except they generally finish sooner and if they go to far can end up a bit on the fat side. i am sure that others will have varying opinions and will share them with you. Others might think that as you are Mr. Beef they shouldn't share an opinion with you...

Hi Mike you can tell a lot on the PH of your soil by looking to see what is growing if you have clover then it will not be acidic and not really require lime if you have rushes moss and stuff like that then this indicates a high water table and therefore acidic soil. Besides adding the lime you wil...

Clive Although I don't register any bulls and only birth notify the steers what you says does make a lot of sense and I would be happy to be one of the 25 to sign the paper if it meant (a) lower charges for people and (b) It kept your herd registered and therefore kept a wider gene pool going. Lets...

I have never come across it Stew. The only time I have heard of anything like that was when they used to kill slightly older boars than they should and there would be boar taint on the meat. Other than that I don't think you should have any problem with what you feed. I wait to be corrected. :)

You don't actually need to wax them, you can put moss around the cutting and bandage it on. This is how it was done in the dark ages. The tree dies as there is no food able to travel up underneath the bark, the flow is the in the part between the bark and the dry bit. If you get a heel cutting -- w...

Have you got any land near by that could be considered conservation grazing, that might save you selling off your herd for a song. Alternatively you might find somewhere else before it is time to move out. Where about are you Oliver

They will calve to a WB no problem . i have a friend who puts a Sim to his Dexters and they cope fine. Biggest problem is they grow so fast they have difficulty bending down to get the teats. I will try and post a picture of one Sim X Dex. Watch this space.

Hi Mark, I assume the cows are still feeding the calves if so it depends on the age of the calves as to how much they will draw on the reserves of their mam. Also how much grazing is in the field? The cow shouldn't put on too much weight whilst she is feeding her calf and the yearlings will need so...
