Rarely by Duchy originals products, especially the veg as it is often foreign. I think they are stretching the brand too far
My preference is for local, seasonal

Re: TB Testing Dates
Mine got moved, wanted it in summer so I could do it in daylight after work. Important the you are not claiming SFP otherwise you will be fined.

Re: TB Testing Dates
I had the same problem, no success in doing it officially and just went overdue. Easily done as I wasn't selling anything and didn't claim any SFP

Goodbye and thank you
With much sadness I disposed of my small herd last month. In recent years I had not registered them with DCS so all went off on the lorry for meat. On the whole I thoroughly enjoyed 10 years of keeping Dexters, but in recent years I have not had the time required to put into meat sales, so they had ...

Re: Beef from old cows
Don't leave your decision too long, I have an arthritic cow that has gone down hill rapidly in the last 2 weeks with the onset of cold and wet weather, so I would no longer want to put her on a trailer.

Calving Assistance
Interested to hear what assistance, if any, people have had to give either during calving or after?
On my small tally I put it at <5% (prolapse), but never had to assist during.

Re: Cattle handling systems
It would be great. But even with proper hurdles for a mobile setup I find they "migrate" over the year to the farthest corners to patch up damaged fencing etc. When you want to use them it requires several days of fencing repairs to get everything back together again.

Re: Close the discussion board?
I hope you don't feel the need to close it. I look at it nearly every day and have found it very useful to be able to search past posts first if I have queries about anything. I think there have been fewer postings over the last year which probably makes it appear more political. Perhaps consider a ...

Re: Dexter Sale at Exeter Livestock Market
Sorry if I have misunderstood, but I don't see the how Environmental Health regulations prevent co-operative marketing schemes working. I am not currently participating in such a scheme, but have in the past. We supplied outlets via the local abattoir and therefore the EH regulations are between the...

Re: Dexter Sale at Exeter Livestock Market
Mac said What would be of great interest to me is a co-operative marketing option - I have plenty of scope to produce cattle but no time to get into farmers markets, web sales or other such outlets. When I first started I wanted to get a similar thing going thought we could all take it in turns to ...

Re: Why I don't outwinter...
I think it has been 8 years now since I started keeping Dexters. I have always been happy out wintering them until the last 3 years, January 2014 and December 2015 have been awful with the wet weather.
If it continues like this I will have to reconsider.

Going Nuts for Ivy
Has anyone else experienced their cattle going mad for ivy? Put them all in a new field a fortnight ago with plenty of grass and they have gone straight for a hedgerow and stripped all the ivy. After a week the landlord opened the gate to an adjacent paddock and they have broken a rail, pushed over ...

Re: T.B test
Got a couple of years to our next 4 year test, but vets have advised us that it wont be them doing it but a private company, think there arent enough cattle round here for them to justify the staff training required. The powers that be have given a contract to XL vets to undertake TB testing. Your ...

Re: Haylage waste!!
Personally I'm not a fan of ring feeders as I find there is too much waste and poaching around the feeder, but appreciate they are far less labour intensive than the alternatives. I mainly feed mine twice a day on the ground in small piles equivalent to probably half a conventional bale, anymore I f...
