Re: Photographs of your Dexters ....
I haven't posted anything for a long time as my ability to keep dexters has been in doubt for a few years, which has been quite stressful at times. This was due to my dependency on renting land which went through a period of turmoil whilst various landowners decided to do other things. Nevertheless ...

Dexter Gateway Concept
I was not at the AGM and I wonder whether there was any discussion about the Dexter Gateway Concept as described in the September Bulletin ?

What do I do with the old girl ?
I've a 15 year old cow who I thought would be in calf, due in April. However, she's with the bull and last week he was all over her for a couple of days so it appears she's not. She'd put weight on over winter, but she's a greedy cow and looks likes she's just packed the pounds on. Is this an age wh...

Wintering Out
I've gained access to some sizeable grazing land for this winter and intend to out-winter many of the cattle. What supplements should I use, if any ? Should I still provide some hay even if the grass is holding up ? There's no field shelter on this land, but there are trees and hedges. Would this be...

Learned something new this week
I noticed my herd matriarch (who is now 14 years old) looked lop sided in her pelvis. The ilium bone was quite pronouned on one side and very small on the other. There were no other symptoms of a problem, the cow was behaving and moving normally. Being quite worried about this I got the vet out. His...

Re: Soon to be orphaned calf
This calf will drink a holstein dry. Started off with 2 litres of milk twice a day, then increased to 3 now 4 and she's still looking for more. Still only eating a small amount of calf feed, so think I'll have to decrease the milk soon to get her to take more solids.

Colin

Re: Soon to be orphaned calf
Thanks for all the advice. Cow went on Monday and I've managed to get the heifer calf to drink powdered milk from a bucket, athough she needs help. She didn't take to calf feed at all at first but has eaten a little today. I'm hoping in the next day or two she gets the hang of this herself. Many tha...

Soon to be orphaned calf
Today one of my breeding cows has received a second IR. She has a 2.5 month old heifer calf which I've been informed I can keep. The calf is in excellent condition. I can run her with 6 other mums but I'm not confident she will be able to steal sufficient milk. At her age, should I try and bucket tr...

Re: Judy Knight RIP
This is really sad news. Judy was a lovely lady. I went to see her at home when I first started with Dexters and she was so kind and informative with her advice. I was at her herd dispersal but didn't come away with any cattle, just her Dexter crush and some leather halters in the hope it would insp...

Re: calving
Out of 58 calves, the only calving problems we've had since we started was with a couple of shorts. Nearly the whole herd are non-shorts and so far (touch wood) they have all calved without the need for intervention. So the chances are you will not need to do anything. With respect suckling, I found...
