Re: Average age for heifers to calve
So far I have only had one Dexter heifer turn into cow, she was 25 months. I aim to breed them at 15 months, but with so little experience it is always difficult to know when the heifer is ready. Getting fat is more likely here than being too poorly grown, I think. But also a well grown Dexter heife...

Re: Average age for heifers to calve
Thanks for the tip on looking up cows and their progeny in the herd book. I have spent some time exploring, it is very interesting. A very slow way of producing statistics though. I have found that not few Dexters are nearly three years when they have their first calf. Is that a result of bulls spen...

Average age for heifers to calve
At what age do your Dexter heifers freshen on average? (Do one say freshen about first-timers?) Is it possible to pull this kind of statistics out of the Herd Book, or any other cattle register? Would be very interesting to learn more. We have a heritage register that can produce a lot of statistics...

Re: How much water does a Dexter drink?
10 litres a day? Noo, that is too little. A dexter may milk 10 litres a day, obviously she needs more water than that. Did you mean 10 gallons?
My dexter cow in milk plus a steer plus a heifer drink about 100 litres a day I think. So on average that would be approximately 10 gallons each.

Re: Sheep and Dexters
(My answer is from a Swedish point of view, but I guess you have similar circumstances to be aware of.) I would make sure not to bring any foot rot, liver flukes or Haemonchus contortus in. The cattle may not have any problems with sheep foot rot or Haemonchus, but it is very difficult to get rid of...

In the UK most dairy cattle, or a lot anyhow, would get maize silage. Maybe that's what the cheese he is testing was made from? I don't know anything about it really or what they feed in France. Could be the case.. I THINK it was grass silage, but I am really not sure. There was a translator involv...

I am sure any cow you are milking will pick up your mood and will change to some extent, either in her behaviour or in her milk let down, or both. When I had my herd of milkers I noticed that they didn't like loud noises, loud music, raised voices etc. It would all have an adverse effect on milk le...
