Re: Over age heifer for beef.
I've just done one Stephanie. I grew a heifer, deliberately kept her back and barren for 4 years. Totally grass-fed all those years. Put her in the freezer a few months ago. Went on holiday, came back, freezer had blown a fuse so haven't got a clue what the beef would have been like

Gemma Fullard is excellent and very experienced. But don't know how far she'll travel from south Warks? You can get her details from the online herd book I imagine.

Re: Hello, and start up question.
I come back to the numbers. If you want to do a lot, then it could be difficult to find fat stock / weaners. But as Ben is thinking of starting with 3-4 carcasses a year, that should be relatively easy find. Going back to breeding, if you are going down that route Ben, then do be careful to fully un...

Re: Hello, and start up question.
Re the control, breeding won't give you control; buying-in gives your more control and choice IMO. Remember we're only talking a few animals a year so not worth breeding to be honest. If you were selling 50+ animals a year, then finding them could be a problem. But to find a few locally shouldn't be...

Re: Hello, and start up question.
If you are doing this commercially, then I think Jac is spot on. If I were starting again, I would buy in, not breed, especially with small numbers. That is if you have people within a reasonable distance who can supply you. Prices should be reasonable and to be honest, it's not worth (financially) ...

Re: aberdeen angus on a dexter heifer
We've done about 150 Angus X Dexter calves but only 4 to heifers. 3 were fine and the other had one of the biggest calves of all, just a unfortunate coincidence. It was OK but needed a vet out to help (mainly because it was 3 a.m. and -14C in the shed and I was very tired) and we used a jack for the...

Looks like it Ann, but no, it's a Stabiliser X Dexter. They're not usually that fluffy though.

Re: Soon to be orphaned calf
Hard luck Colin. We just had an orphan at a few weeks old. Got her penned up with a few other cows and calves. Man-handled her at first to get her to take a bottle (I used a lamb bottle) and when she got used to it (2-3 days?) she started to come to the gate for a bottle. Then she started pestering ...

Re: Cattle Sign
I'll try and dig out what I'm thinking of. HSE have a recommendation that you do not keep recently calved cows, or cows about to calve in a field with public right of way but I have it in my head that you aren't supposed to keep any animal that you think might be dangerous in such a field? Anyhow, t...

Re: Cattle Sign
I'm looking for some advice on signs for fields where we have cattle with young calves and a stock bull, where the field has a footpath. We have a number of areas that are very scenic with regular visitors even regular tourist coaches during the summer. To stress, we have not had any problem and al...

Re: Twins
nice to hear from you again clive I thought you had deserted the dexters :) Not deserting Dexters Ann, but we are coming out of cattle this year and going sheep only. Just down to a few old ones now except a couple of exceptionally nice crosses which I'll try and sell in the autumn rather than cull...

We had a few sets of twins, all the females were freemartins. One in twenty are Ok I was told. One advantage, they keep the cow fit
