Re: Dwarf breeder - Isle of Man?
I breed short to short in the US, and I get 0% deformed aborted "bulldogs". How is that possible? It's because many "shorts" don't have the chondrodysplasia gene... there are all sorts of other genes that can make Dexters "short". In my herd, I have eliminated the chond...

Re: bringing back the extinct dexter
I've bred hundreds of red Dexters that trace back to Irish Red Dexters in the 1890's. No living Dexters have pedigrees tracing 100% completely back to Ireland with no holes. All Dexters have some holes in their distant pedigrees. If you think you have a Dexter with no holes in their distant pedigree...

Re: bringing back the extinct dexter
This is a silly article. The red gene is already in thousands of US Dexter's. I've had hundreds of them.

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
In 2011, the likelihood that the poll gene is hiding in Dexters with stunted horn growths was discussed here in this forum. But that was before testing was available, and it was before we discovered the likelihood that there have always been some Dexters with the polled gene, since the foundation. N...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
The Dexters pictured above with horn growths, that also have a hidden polled gene, are not my animals. The animals are tested as having a poll gene, and are registered as polled by the registries. I'm trying to get copies of all their polled tests. I do have one so far. Here it is. https://i.ibb.co/...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
Concerning Godstone Esmeralda, nearly all of us had false information about Dexters in the past, so we were forced to invent possible answers to explain her polledness. Here is the false information that made us question Esmeralda's pedigree: Myth: The original 1890 Irish Dexter Breed Standard requi...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
Of the many of thousands of Dexters in history prior to the 1980's, there are no records of horn status for any of them because horn status wasn't tracked. We have to assume that each one of those thousands of historic Dexters has an “UNKNOWN” horn status until we have some degree of evidence one wa...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
My information has nothing to do with being a "Devil's Advocate" . I have a ton of genetics expertise and information analysis expertise and I have researched this very carefully. Facts: 1. The 1890 Royal Dublin Society Dexter Herdbook volume 1, discussed five old Irish breeds of cattle in...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
This is a picture of a purebred registered Dexter bull. He is tested and registered as having a hidden polled gene, and he has scur-horns. The polled gene can hide in animals with horns and can hide especially well in de-horned herds.

Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter
https://i.ibb.co/zxVVVrM/Screenshot-20180803-153821.png The Irish Dexter Breed was founded as a true breed in 1890 when the Royal Dublin Society formed a breed association, created the first real Irish Dexter Herdbook along with a breed description, and set rules for registration. The rules printed...

Re: Weighing Calves
I take a very thick piece of plywood board perhaps 2 feet by 2 feet square, out to the pasture, along with a bathroom scale. I lay the plywood on a flat area of the pasture near the newborn calf, and place the scale on the plywood. I weigh myself 2 or 3 times to make certain the scale is stable and ...

Re: Photo of Chondrodysplastic Steer Joint
This link down below shows that osteochondritis dissecans is often caused by defective ACAN genes creating aggrecan deficiency. BD1 Chondrodysplasia is a broken ACAN gene causing aggrecan deficiency. " osteochondritis dissecans At least one mutation in the ACAN gene has been found to cause oste...

Re: Photo of Chondrodysplastic Steer Joint
I did some research on osteochondrosis/osteochondritis. I found that it can be triggered by mutant ACAN (aggrecan) genes. Aggrecan is an important component of healthy cartilage. So it turns out that broken ACAN genes which are the cause of chondrodysplasia in Dexters, can also be the cause of osteo...

Re: Photo of Chondrodysplastic Steer Joint
All my cows are short legged (dwarf as you call them) and I have been keeping them 20 years now, my cows generally age to around 14/15 although I have a 16 and half year old at the moment and she is in calf again. Never had problems like you describe and I certainly would not be without my shorts, ...

Photo of Chondrodysplastic Steer Joint
Interested in comments regarding this photo, especially from Louisa Gidney 1. This is the joint of a two year old Chondrodysplastic steer with arthritic joints. 2. The other joints were also deformed and arthritic. 3. This steer was born on the breeder's farm to a chondro-Dexter mother. 4. This stee...
