Re: Bull misbehaving
Sometimes only necessary to poke a bale over the feed fence on the loader and let the bull take it from there

Cattle Prices
We have a few heifers for sale and were asked if we had any steers for sale, which we do, after an exchange of emails:--
"I would pay up to 400 for a 24 month old one."
does anyone sell cattle at these prices??

Re: Registering of Bulls
1. Do you have a previous bull calf with the same genetics ? Yes - go to 2 / no = Steer 2. Is the previous calf really good and maybe should have been kept entire? yes = go to 3 / no = Steer 3. Is it a bloodline you want to keep? yes = go to 4 / no = Steer 4. Is there any local or regional demand fo...

Re: Registering of Bulls
Register him or steer him, difficult enough to move a registered bull in my view - rather than use an unregistered bull I would use an Angus or other native.

Re: Beef steer stats
I've just been updating a little project of mine to predict returns from a beast in terms of products, and pricing necessary to achieve a target return. 7 steers and heifers included to date ranging from 178 to 239 Kg Dwt overall average 200Kg - all killed just sub 30 months, all grass fed with a sn...

Possibly not Exactly How to do Linear Assessment
A GUIDE TO LINEAR ASSESSMENT (MAYBE NOT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY) The great day dawned, BBC forecast was consulted over coffee and the edict handed down that rig of the day was sexothane and wellies. Breakfast over we headed out to location Alpha where the youngstock were checked and counted before pro...

Re: Is this the competition?
The texture is very good, quite fine and tender but it is lacking flavour. So I don't think its Dexter, although the texture is similar to Dexter the flavour isn't quite there but VERY nice! I'm not ruling it out...has anyone else tried it? Are we competing with this? Should we be competing with th...

Re: Outwintering? In for the winter?
Bit of a mixture here - one mob of pure dexters is "out" but they have access to an unbedded shed so can make thier own minds up if they want to be out of the weather or not. The other mob are mixed with luing and angus cross cows and are at he moment out - period - they have whins (gorse)...

Re: Grazing drainage ditches
can you get into it and walk along the length of the ditch to the exit slope without too much difficulty during your proposed grazing period? If you can then sounds ok - if not then your cattle would have a similar struggle - if in doubt then a temporary electric fence might be an option
