Protein % of feed for in calf cows.

Hi everyone. Our cows are soon due to calve and although they're getting some hard feed we're just double checking its not to potent for them!! I've tried looking on the web but struggling to find the answer - mostly for dairy. We're doing a home mix that works out at 21% pro. They're on ad lib hayl...

Re: Deadweights and cutting spec!

I apologise now incase I've missed this point (only skim read the thread!!) but no one appears to be talking about actual saleable meat weights it's all DW, which isn't what you get back!!

Just thought I'd add that!

Re: How much meat from a short leg

Hi,

We've only had one done so far and we got back 70kg odd of meat after it'd been cut up/boned out! Not sure how that compares to others on here. There is a post/spreadsheet by someone on here with loads of info.

It is delicious meat, enjoy.

Re: Using entire males for meat...

This is Part 2 of that research http://jas.fass.org/content/45/4/699.full.pdf Makes for an interesting read. Makes me think I'll go with my gut feeling and avoid using bulls as I daren't risk people finding the meat 'tough', especially when what we ourselves have eaten melted in the mouth. Thank you...

Using entire males for meat...

Hi guys,

I'm looking for some guidance. Does meat from bulls have any taint? Some people say tup and boar meat has a taint and I'm wondering if this is the case with cattle too?

Many thanks

Re: Bovine T.B - Have you seen this film

Hi Rachael The TB fiasco has been going on a great deal longer than a year! :? I must apologise Steve for my typo - it was supposed to read "it's been like this for years I believe" but unfortunately I missed off the 's' from year. I do come from a farming family and have been making a li...

Dexters for beef - Lincolnshire

Hi, Although I imagine most people will already have a 'place' for any cattle they cannot/do not want to sell I thought it may be worth posting on here. We have a herd of Dexters - 6 breeding cows at present - and are breeding for beef sales. We currently have 1 steer fit, one coming up and 3 more t...

Re: Bovine T.B - Have you seen this film

What general public don't realise & I didn't until husband pointed it out is that the current system for TB control in cattle is blatantly not working!!! It's been like this for year I believe - testing & culling reactors etc has it not? (Will stand corrected as not personally been involved ...

Re: Dehorning

Am far from being expert - that's my husband!! But thought I'd share what we do. (Apologoies if it comes across as telling you how to do something you already know) Dehorned our calves recently - in region of month old. Buds tangible on them all. Used a dehorning iron. Ensured it was hot enough by p...
