Re: Beefing my bull

I can't say I have killed a bull as yet but I have shot and eaten some very old roe bucks. The first one I shot everyone without exception told me to sell or mince as he would be tough as old boots. He was as tender as anything I had ever tried. He was shot well outside of the rut so that may coensi...

Re: Dehorning

Thanks all for the replys. I dehorn with an iron but really don't like it so thought I would ask around, the iron is for larger cattle so it's a tricky job.

Dehorning

Hi All, I was wondering at what age most of you dehorn (if you do) and method. I usually use a dehorning iron but as always these are designed for full sized beasts not dexters. I dehorned last week and although successful in that most of the bud is out I think some horn will grow. I don't show so t...

Re: Cow not settled to calf.

Have had this with ewes and lambs so penned them then took my german shepard into the room (on a lead). The mothering instinct immediately kicks in and that's job done. Not tried it on cattle though but it may work.

Re: Orphan Calf - Home Wanted

wow that is allot of work, I have reared orphans before, 8 weeks on the bottle twice a day and they have done ok but that sounds more than my skill and time level at present. Thanks anyway.

Re: Orphan Calf - Home Wanted

Lisa,

I have just had my first calf of the year (on wed) and have a very milky cow feeding her, I would take him but have never fostered a calf to a cow before, if you can give me an idea how I would be interested.

Thanks,

Fraser

Re: thristy cattle

Hi Isabelle,

I have 9 dexters out on some nice grass but no shade (will move to woodland in June for shade). They drank a 1000 litre tank in 5 days. In woodland the 12 white parks we had drank a 1000 litre tank in 2 weeks due to the shade.

Re: WANTED YOUNG BULL - Warriner School need a new bull

I have 2 of their cows from the bull they eventually got. Both very friendly and both produced cracking dexterxhereford calves, one I sold on as soon as weaned and the steer I still have, he is huge.

Re: Edible plant?

I am reading through back posts, have read through the odd numbers and am now on the even ones, hence the reason for responding to so many old posts. Rosebay willow herb is a ruderal it has small wind born seeds that need bare ground to colonise. My Dexters graze a number of wildlife trust sites and...

Re: Japenese Knotweed - Off topic - sorry

Oh and jap knot weed has little or no defences against grazing because it has not had that much pressure in its native range so has not adapted to produce grazing defences such as bad taste eg wild brassicas, thorns or stings

Re: Japenese Knotweed - Off topic - sorry

Deer don't browse bracken, Duncan is right bracken is a carcogen particularly dangerous to humans around july time when sporilating. The best method to kill it is bruising either whipping the stems once unfurled or better still dragging a hawthorn log complete with stubby branches behind a tractor. ...

Re: Brisket Sandwiches

Best beef sarnies I have ever eaten were from salt tongue, out of this world and by far and away the most delicious cut of beef. I also did some dexter brisket at the sametime, same method, wow fantastic, as clive said fatty but done this way it makes no difference.

Re: keeping 2 bulls together

Hi, Thanks all for the replies. The traditional Hereford has been polled, I don't like horns as I have to house them. Apart from the idea of grading up the carcasses I am also looking for a breed that takes coarse grasses such as Tor and Calamgrost'is, my experience is Dexters don't. However I have ...
