Meat Courier

Can members please advise me on options for meat delivery. We have been supplying meat in 15kg boxes from home to school or for local collection. However we are now getting requests from London (150 miles). How do other suppliers transport their meat products - one refrigerated courier has quoted £2...

Melton Sale - Transport

Is there anyone going to the sale on Saturday who might have transport home to Worcestershire for any cows that I might buy?

Sorry to be a pain, but I don't really want to drag the trailer all the way, and then come home empty.

We are on the Worcs / Shrops border.

Many thanks

Re: Herd Health

Duncan, As always a great answer, so full of accurate and unbiased information - the DCS and Forum are lucky to have your input. I am still however concerned that people can lose genetically important animals, thinking they are going to eradicate the disease, only to find that vectors on the farm re...

Re: Herd Health

This is a tricky subject and one that many breeds have investigated and taken up. I would like Duncan's opinion (as his knowledge is probably better than mine), but there are problems with the tests and schemes in my opinion. 1. Neospora - foxes carry this so any contact with infected foxes on your ...

Re: Back on the high horse

My point exactly! Could I charge more, probably; do I need to, definitely not; would I make more money, possibly not if sales went down. As I said in my initial comment, every farm is different and one cannot possibly know the margins made by each. The people on the website quoted almost certainly h...

Re: Back on the high horse

I can't say that I am very experienced at this, nor am I good at the to & fro discussions with what we 'should' do to achieve this or that; it always strikes me that each farm or breeder does whatever suits them, however I can put our case forward as rose veal has come up. For three years now, w...

Does this help? If the link works it is Gloucester trading standards rules.

Re: It's not just auction prices that are on the floor...

Can I please ask for more information on the finances and figures as it doesn't all make crystal clear sense to me? We have tried killing Dexters for beef and it is hard. Hard to find an abattoir, hard to get a price for killing and butchering and hard to sell on a regular basis rather than a one of...

Re: Only birth notifying ....

Dear Clive, That is the main point, I suppose. There is a question on the interpretation by the AHO, but the law says pedigree. In the case of females I do not know of the rule being tested, but in the case of bulls, it certainly has been. Now if the AHO can prove that they are animals intended for ...

Re: Only birth notifying ....

I think we are both saying the same thing in effect, but I will just reiterate, the legislation is the document to check and that is quoted below. "pedigree animal” means a bovine animal of the genus Bos in respect of which a pedigree certificate has been issued by a recognised breed society an...

Re: Only birth notifying ....

In my opinion and experience there is some uncertainty about this question. The legislation says 'pedigree' animal and that is not dependent upon full registration and so if you insist, your AH office will find it hard to argue that they have to be fully registered. Pedigree, means that the animal h...

Crush & Race

We have recently started a new Dexter Herd (Beech Hay) and are very pleased with our cattle from several herds. We now need to make sure that we have a good, useful handling system in place. We would be grateful for information on race sizes, height of hurdles and width and of course the Dexter Crus...
