contract calf catching/ear tagging
Usually we bring the herd in several times during the calving period with recently born calves to tag, disbud and castrate in a pen and race, but would be much less stressful for mums and calves if we can do this out in the field. Are there contractors who do catching, tagging, paste disbudding etc?...

Grazing drainage ditches
We want to join 2 grass fields together and leave the intervening dyke/ditch open rather than fence round it. Being Dexters, doubtless they will explore every square inch of the field. It is a typical Fenland heavy clay land ditch about 300 m long, 5 foot deep with steep sides, and rarely holds any ...

Dexter beef on Master Chef?
Had an telephone enquiry about beef availability today - said he had seen dexter beef being cooked on Master Chef this week. He was really looking for a fresh meat supplier in the Cambridgeshire area. Did anyone see the programme and are there any fresh dexter beef suppliers in this area?

Feisty dexters
After another annual session yesterday with the vet castrating/dehorning calves, and the vet amazed at how fast and feisty dexter calves are for their size etc, and telling me how no other native breed is remotely like this, why is it we have not bred this trait out? Is it possible to select bulls f...

Re: Herd Health
We've recently had a draft Health Plan prepared by our vet with a view to adding Red Tractor Standard Beef designation to our arable quality assurance, but if we implement the Plan I imagine it will pretty well wipe out any small profit we might make on our 20 head/10 breeding female herd - given th...

We've just sold 3 steers - in either 1/4 or 1/8th boxes. Two families/friends shared one quarter box from the same animal, hung for 17 days. They've been pleased with the meat so far, but both families each cooked a topside joint on sunday - one said theirs was really tender, the other said their's ...

Re: Steer finishing advice
Thank you for the advice.
Presumably a field of grass that's growing back nicely from first grazing in May is better for finishing the steers than grass that has not yet been grazed and now gone to seed heads?
Or doesn't it make much difference at this time of year?

Steer finishing advice
These two long leg steers are 24 months old. How much longer do they need, or do they need supplements to finish? We've only had one short leg done last year and we don't think he was fat enough.

Re: Wilful steer
Thank you for the replies. I'd say he is definitely on the agressive side of curious - we have others who come up and rub or butt us gently because they want a fuss, but when you try to stroke him eg underneath the chin like with the others but he gets much more animated, gives the impression of not...

Re: Wilful steer
His father was very placid indeed. His mother likes a stroke and seems fine, although this is the first calf we have had from her, having bought her earlier in 2010. She had another last year, but so far that one seems fine. She had her previous calf apparently in 2008. The vet castrated him with a ...

Wilful steer
One of our five long leg steers born July 2011 is very "forward" and comes up to us and starts tossing his head and butting. None of our other 20 dexters are like this. What's the best way to deal with this - do I rap him on the nose with my knuckles, or push him away, or ignore it? Is the...
