Interesting to read all the ideas re bulls for crossing. Has anyone else used the North Devon as we do. They are a breed that do well on grass and typically have smaller calves.
As per my earlier post the returns as suckled calves are not to be sniffed at.
Perhaps the Devon is not so well travelled?

Re: Best/Worst Dexter Cross
Just an update on this topic which hasn't seemed to have attracted much comment. Just before Christmas I sold a Dex x North Devon steer 6 months old minimal barley creep for last 2 months £485-00. 2no Dex x North Devon heifers again 6 months £380 each. All out of pedigree dexter cows. I was more tha...

Re: Best/Worst Dexter Cross
Hi Cairnhill, This is in my experience a tricky subject with the hard core dexter breeders visiting the site. Maybe one regular user does cross with angus. In my opinion those of us who do cross dexter require dexter to continue to cross breed. I am successfully crossing pedigree dexter with Red Rub...

Re: Cattle handling systems
The picture posted there by Rob shows a system that we have. Although it seems hefty it is so easy to move in the back of the trailer. We have two outside blocks of 12 acres and we simply set up the system in 10 15 minutes shake a bag of corn in the pen and away you go. Normally it is positioned in ...

Knotweed
Having just watched Countryfile whilst thoroughly enjoying our roast Dexter Rib I am thinking did I read that Dexters eat knotweed ? I am sure I saw this somewhere but the brains not quite engaging wonder if anyone has had any experience.

Re: Round Feeder For Dexters
I would say that a standard ring feeder for standard bales is best as a smaller feeder will probably increase the waste. I find that if they can pull through the bale at least in a larger feeder it isn,t pulled on to the floor. My non shorts have no problem clearing a bale fed in a standard feeder, ...

Premature calf
We had our TB test on Monday and all went calmly as all the dexters are well handled. We have six girls due to calf to pedigree dexter mid Jan to mid Feb. Tuesday night one of the girls, a heifer calved down. I found her first thing with her calf dead and lying directly behind her facing her with le...

Re: Sale of Pedigree Dexter Cattle
My wife has just informed me the catalogue is on the Kivells website. It isn't linked through the main market page you need to go through the cattle link on the forthcoming fixtures.
My apologies must try harder next time, now off to digest the catalogue ! Mark

Re: Sale of Pedigree Dexter Cattle
Just a comment really.
I see the Kivells site has some indication regarding numbers but I would like to have seen a proper catalogue fitting for a pedigree sale. Devon and Cornwall covers a large area, it would be encouraging to know more before traveling.

Ah th edear old planners! I have had a few discussions with my local planners over time. I assume you are not in an area of outstanding natural beauty or sssi ? The size of building you are talking about is not too big, the only thing though you mention a mezzanine level ? Does this mean your buildi...

Winter feed
Are there real feed shortages North of Cornwall?
We have been relatively lucky and the grass is going well prior to the final cut.
How much is good round bale haylage making ?
Be interested to know how others are fairing.

Re: Milk problem
Update on the cow and calf. Had the vet Friday morning and she says the udder has had an infection which has caused the udder problem. She seems to think there has been a slow build up and not mastitis that has been prevelent this spring. We have now given penstrep and the calf is being hand reared....

Re: Milk problem
Thanks for the advice guys, both my neighbour and my father -in - law have not seen the four quarters seemingly choked as this cow is. She is fine in herself no temp and eating but no milk at all. Have given calf colostrum from neighbours heifers that calved earlier today. At 7 he eventually sucked ...

Milk problem
Any advice welcome! We have had a bull calf from a 6th calver at 11.30 this morning. The calf is a cracking Limo sired lad and we had no problems calving at all. Have been monitoring all afetrnoon, cleansed within a couple of hours but calf had not sucked by 4 o'clock. The cow is non short and has a...

Re: How much water does a Dexter drink?
Debra your 163 m3 for July Dec inclusive is about 1m3 per day or 220 gallons or 1,000 litres. With 1500 minutes in a day you can see how a leak less than a litre per minute adds up. If you have access to the meter ensure troughs are full and taps off and simply watch the meter it does not have to mo...
