Re: Hire of bull and TB test charge

I can give you details of last year's costs: The bull owner stood the cost of his TB test and charged me £30 per cow served. I've just taken delivery of the same bull last week, but won't know this year's prices until he goes. Vets have several different methods of charging for private TB tests. Las...

Where do you think the ‘cut-off’ point is - if there is such a thing - with regard to the number of cows/heifers in the herd, where purchasing a bull would be a better option than hiring one? (A.I. is not a realistic option). Clearly, a major factor would be the price of the bull, whether purchased...

I've not long moved back 'home' to Carmarthenshire and need to find an AI man very soon (keeping a bull is not a real option). Has anyone got contact details? I used a company called 'R Breeders' when I lived in the midlands and found them to be excellent. If there's someone like them down here, I'...

'Latest' info from the Veterinary Times (4th Feb edition): Intervet's regional veterinary advisor - Intervet being the company that's won the tender to supply DEFRA with 22.5 million doses of the Bluetongue vaccine - has said that he is 99% certain that the vaccine would be prescribed by vets and a...

Thanks, Duncan, for taking the trouble to copy the Veterinary Times' piece; I was wondering myself how to select the best(!) bits from it to post. With regard to Forestblaze and the concern about the deer in the forest of Dean (or any other forest) it is probably worth noting that some species of d...

The udder cream we used to get in was usually split 50:50 between farming clients and the vets' wives.... (and I'm led to believe that the wives only used it as hand cream).

I still think people are not necessarily getting the right end of the stick here. If, for example, there are 23 pairs of chromosomes, only one of those pairs has the XY combination (in the male) which, after splitting into X and Y during gametogenesis, will combine with the other (female, X) gamete...

I think the fact that offspring get the majority of their genes from chromosomes other than the sex chromosomes of their parents (i.e. the X and Y chromosomes) has been overlooked...even by a PhD in genetics.

I'd certainly be interested. Only have five breeding animals at the moment and I'm probably in the same position as Peter in that if I had a reliable outlet, I'd consider increasing stock levels.
