thanks for clearing up any confusion i'd left - i'm a cowmen, not a writer i'm afraid.... heat detectors can seem a good idea, but they are susceptible to false readings - if another cow rides her, if another cow rests her head on it in the race, if she scratches her back on something etc etc. This...

what you could do is get the vet to synchronise your cows - its just a quick jab, and then in 10 days time you know that all your cows will come bulling. We use it extensively with limousins and herefords, and it hasn'e affected fertility, conception rates or performance.

you're absolutely right that there was a good show of cattle at the RWAS this year- literally every animal shown was genuinely at the upper quality end of the breed. The show was also very well organised, given the sheer size of the show, and it really deserves to take over the prestege of the RASE...

The show was also very well organised, given the sheer size of the show, and it really deserves to take over the prestege of the RASE...

Have you thought about having a proper dispersal sale? It could be combined with lots from other herds- we could have an actual proper sale, which would not only be better for buyers, but also probably get vendors a better price and help indicate prices... It could well be worth at least discussing...

much of what has been said is spot on, but it is necessary to put two tags in within 20 days. we had a spot visit of every farm in our village last winter, and whilst we had two tags in everything over 2 days old, others didnt and got into serious financial penalties. you have to get her in calf as sson as possible- otherwise she's just eating, not doing any work, and putting on fat. There's no harm in putting her straight in with the bull.
