You have to review your costs all the time and I must admit we considered only registering calves from our best cows. Down here in the West Country where TB is still rife with nothing being done to tackle it, it does make sense to keep a pedigree herd. We had one heifer last year that was supposedl...

I agree that success rate varies between individual cows. Our AI man always says not to inseminate them the first time they come bulling after calving as the success rate from the second time onwards will be far greater. Also, that there wil be a greater chance of conception the day after you see t...

As far as I understand it, once semen is allowed in then you can register the offspring as normal. It apparently all depends on where you want to import from and how DEFRA perceive the degree of risk from that country in terms of potential to bring in disease.

Just on your thoughts Clive about using overseas bulls, one of our neighbours has been for several years breeding polled South Devons and now has almost all of the UK polled bloodlines. He has 'found' a different strain overseas but is finding it virtually impossible to get a licence to import the ...

Ours had their TB test, first Blue Tongue jab and Fly Pour all done this week.

Hi Carole, Stuart Woollen did ours, absolutely top job too. Charged us last summer £10 per cow and £20 per bull but he only did the ones that were needed. He brings a rollover crush, only problem I found was that our short leg bull only just fitted it so a small short leg cow may be a problem.

Had a calf born early Saturday morning. He seemed ok but took a while to get to his feet and drink and I noticed that the whites of his eyes were bloodshot. I have never seen this before and wondered whether the birth (during the night) may have been traumatic. Anybody any ideas? (big bull calf out...

One of the reasons we breed pure Dexters is that they calve so easily, usually on their own and with no assistance. It keeps our vet's bills low and the cows healthy. I would have thought that by breeding to a larger breed bull all this could be put at risk. I remember several years ago when dairy f...
