I took out all the barbed wire on the place when I moved here. Where it is needed I use a single strand of electrified wire about 4" above the netting. It needs to be well strained or it can earth on the fence underneath.

Make a start now, but not on the cow. Use a rubber teat on the end of a bottle of water, and don’t sit under your cow until you can empty the bottle of water in reasonable time with either hand. Far better for both of you to get some slight proficiency without upsetting her and she won’t have to lo...

I must have kept Dexters for at least 15 years before I had a crush, then I had one made for me that cost around £100! Fortunately we don’t live in Ireland train your animals, handle them quietly, and smile nicely at your vet. Give yourself plenty of time, you won’t need it providing you feel relax...

This string has left me overwhelmed. Having been breeding Dexters for sixty years I should have picked up something to pass on, but all the above contributors have taught me something in return, life is a learning experience. One thing is certain this charming little animal took over my life many y...

Certainly not good publicity, I sincerely hope it is something can be soon forgotten. I know nothing of the circumstances in this case, but over the years have seen many instances where impatience caused problems. The procedure inevitably is prolonged when folks are impatient. Just waiting and leav...

My ground is far too wet to run mine out. Building is expensive but given you have that, a built in silo and an electrified wire or bar saves handling. I use no chemicals neither sprays or fertilizer, all muck goes on the silage ground. I do buy in a little hay to cover animals that are boxed for s...

I wont usually recommend inbreeding, although I practice it, but in the case of your four heifers, if the choice is between putting them back to related bulls or crossing with a bigger breed, I would suggest inbreeding was probably the safer option. If your stock is good enough you could be very pl...

Yes Clive and not just in your area, it is a problem throughout the country for the small breeder. The latest T.B. regulations have aggravated it; some breeders who used to hire out find it no longer worth the hassle. Elsewhere on this board postings have shown the very high cost of A.I, apart from...

I was delighted to read your posting Penny, I hope the TV operators haven’t managed to sabotage your efforts; I know from long ago experience they are capable. I am sure most breeders will certainly not be looking to criticise but will be appreciative of your efforts to publicise the breed. I gathe...

Clacko I admire your enthusiasm, but I have to ask what are you purchasing? Very few bulls have any performance credentials. The majority are valued only on their appearance. The present elite bull scheme is a genetical nonsense. Appearance gives no guide as to what they will throw The Dexter is al...

Don’t be too apologetic Caroline. I agree you should remain aware of the value of a good bull. However the Society largely consists of smallholder members and it is their subscriptions that keep the Society going. The calves those bulls sire will provide useful income in the form of registration fe...
