Martin.....Good to hear from you. Hope your new cattle are settling in. Are you finding they are eating more than your Dexters ate? Mine seem to be eating through my bales of silage/haylage at a rate of knots. We have no problem selling the beef, fortunately customers come looking for us, but then ...

Clive - Take a look at the photograph we have on DBO...there are short and non-short animals in that group. This photograph was taken some three years ago and animals we produce today are exactly the same.

We haven't got extremes of either.

Best you visit us sometime.

Clive.......We're farmers, not scientists, We went into Dexters because we liked the size of the cows we were looking at and at that time they were short-legs. We were advised the non-shorts were better used as foundation cows, put to a short leg bull to hopefully produce short-leg heifers and the ...

I don't see it being as straight forward as 'Bob's your uncle.' There has to be at least half the members in the Society breeding from short-leg Dexters. Clive's suggestion would decimate the breed as we know it today. Where would we get the replacements from? There simply would not be sufficient h...

Ben.....Our store steers & heifers grazed marshy ground near to a river and prone to flooding last summer. Our vet advised treating for fluke at housing & again 6 weeks later. Not too expensive and worth doing for peace of mind. We have not treated any other animals for fluke. The animals w...

Dom....We make our own haylage which averaged out at £3.57 per big round bale (netwrap/black plastic wrap/diesel, including carting the bales). Fertiliser is too expensive, so we don't use any. (560 bales this year) We do have our own equipment (purchased from local farmers when they're upgrading, ...

Ken

To put your mind at rest, the Steering Committee were advised by the Society lawyers to vote the Constitution changes as one so we decided to take their advice.

New Boy Thank you, and everyone else, for your fantastic support - it is very much appreciated and uplifting. The Steering Committee has only one thing in mind and that being for the benefit of the Society. It is so nice to read all your postings - we are not out of the woods yet, but hopefully by ...

The outcome of yesterday's EGM was not in the best interests of the DCS, whether or not you support the Steering Committee. During the past few months we, the Steering Committee, have put much time and effort into the proposed Constitutional changes, with only one thing in mind, that being for the ...

Suzie - Vinegar is working well with our cattle when we're putting one into another group to stop the others bullying that new animal. If you keep your boss cow away from the others for a while and then return her she may not be top dog any more, so I would try putting vinegar on her in any case an...

We were told by a good friend of ours, also a fellow Dexter breeder, the best way of introducing a cow/heifer into a different group to prevent bullying, is to spray/pour vinegar along the back & onto head. The smell of vinegar will stop the other Dexters from bullying her. As we were moving ca...

During that period, those members finishing their first term and standing for their second have been able to take their seat again on Cou...
