Hi Sue, Some years ago we had a Dexter who "didn't look quite right". It was autumn and there was a glut of acorns and on visiting my vet advised me that the cow was probably suffering from acron poisoning. She was very constipated, but a few days of a red coloured drench seemed to do the...

Wish I'd known about withdrawing some vaccine whilst in the fridge to save for next dose in 3 weeks time Di. I was told that once the bottle is opened it would only keep for 8 hours - nothing about keeping if it was still at fridge temperature. All cows and sheep now safely vaccinated - well cows a...

Twins still doing very well but the size differential gets larger - definitely a short and a non-short I think. Will try and get some more photos but it is difficult in the barn - oh for some warmer weather and the grass gorwing so I can get them turned out. Duncan - will they be OK to breed from?

Hi Stephanie, Twins are doing really well - the little black one (Gooseberry)is only interested in Mum so I am supplementing the red one (Cloudberry) to make sure they both have enough milk. They are growing apace and I will take an up to date photo for you so you can see their progress. Trouble is...

Thank you all for your kind comments. What would we all do without baler twine! Twins are both doing well - the little black one appears to have got over her touch of pneumonia and spends happy moments skipping around the pen with the bigger sister. Long may it last. I'll put an updated photo on in...

Many thanks Stephanie, I'll give it a try later this evening. Both calves still OK.
Erica

Here we go with my first attempt: Cloudberry is the red one and Gooseberry the black one.

Both calves doing OK but the little one sadly has a touch of pneumonia - one of the dangers of bottle feeding I fear. She did however have a good suckle on mum and I am ever hopeful that with plenty of TLC and care she will survive. We have taken quite a number of photos but I'm not sure how to pos...

Thank you Beryl for your advice. We gave the weaker of the two some colostrum supplement and both calves are fine at the moment. I haven't seen Gooseberry suckle yet but she is certainly a lot stronger than she was earlier today and has passed her first droppings - I always feel this is a good sign...

Great excitement - one of my heifers, Minden Blueberry, has just had twin heifers to Hill Farm Blink - one red and one black - first set of twins that have been born in the Minden herd since I started it 22 years ago! Cloudberry (red one) arrived first, she is also my first red calf, and we thought...

Many thanks Bill. Good to know that there will be no discrimination between commercial and hobby farmers. I will make contact with my vet early next week so he knows how many animals I will need to vaccinate come May or whenever the vaccine becomes available.

I went to an NFU meeting last night about Blue Tongue which was informative. However the person giving the talk made the comment that the vaccination programme is for the commercial farmer and not for the hobby farmer which made several peopleincluding me, very concerned. If the idea is to erradica...

Felicity, would it be possible for those who are not members of a Group to have a copy? I don't belong to a local group because here is the easterly most part of England there isn't one. I too have valued Yvonne's help since she became Secretary - her speedy replies to my emails and answers to my q...

Hi, I've been away from the web site for a week or two and it has been interesting catching up. The Norwegian Red looks a lovely animal but not as good as a Dexter! I was delighted to hear Saffy that you bought an older cow to start your small herd. I think it is a good idea for those new to Dexter...
