Re: An Old Farmers Advice
Thanks Di. Just catching up on earlier posts, a lovely surprise to find this one. I don't know if I still have it in my files but it could be on Google. Thanks again, Margaret Weir

Re: Di Smith Linear
Congratulations. Great results.
In Au, for bulls to move into the Ex category they must first have 5 daughters classifying as VG85 or better.

Re: Slow cooker Brisket - Amazing!
To think I used to have the brisket made into mince, what a waste. I haven't been on this board for ages but I can't resist putting in my two bobs worth when it comes to Dexter brisket. I cook it folded in half, on a bed of fried sliced onion, in a large rectangular slow cooker overnight on low for ...

Re: Calf dehorning
They make a ring around the bud Steve. Some users say they flick the bud out with the hot iron after they cauterise. I have not seen that done, and have yet to be convinced that there is any advantage to be gained in doing that.

Re: Calf dehorning
Congratulations Ian. You must be very happy that your breeding choices have been so heartily endorsed by the classifier. Diversity of individuals' breeding goals maintains diversity in the national gene pool. However, most Dexter breeders will be confronted with the 'disbud or horns' issue for the f...

Re: Calf dehorning
Using poll is tempting, but I would rather have to tip the horns than shorten the pedigree.

Re: Calf dehorning
Hello Maccbob,
I have used a Portasol disbudder on about 200 Dexter calves over 10 years. If mine disappeared I would buy another one immediately. I don't know if it is Mk111 so I googled and it looks the same.
The worst job on the farm, I dont think I would want any cords or tubes attached.

Re: Bull Calf not standing
Hi All, this looks just like contracted tendons. In the past we have had it in calves and foals and have always thought it to be a deficiency. Today we injected 30 spring calvers with B12S (ie with selenium) and we use mineral licks at all times. We have been injecting B12S pre-calving for several y...

Re: Round Feeder For Dexters
Hi all, we bought a standard "Waste Not" (Au) ring feeder that divides into 3 parts for transport, then we had six slightly smaller feeders made to fit Dexters, that will still also fit over the top of a large bale, just. Leaving the wrap on the bale until the feeder is in place is the onl...

Re: Congratulations Duffryn!
Oh woops, sorry Stephanie, I made a mistake! Wedgwood is by Wm Hedgehog 3rd, not your boy. Hedgehog 4th is his uncle, not his sire. Thank goodness for DNA PV, although in this case of mistaken identity they are oceans apart, so to speak!! Thank you for your kind words Clive but if we really had done...

Re: Congratulations Duffryn!
Here in Au we have progeny criteria requirement before Ex can be acheived. Bulls must have 5 daughters scoring VG (85 or more), and cows must have had 3 or more normal calvings. Yesterday a bull we sold 9 years ago, 11yo Wagra Wedgwood by Woodmagic Hedgehog 4th, scored Ex with 6 daughters scoring VG...

Congratulations Duffryn!
Great news! I am very pleased to learn that Woodmagic Petrel at 14.5 years of age has become the first female in UK to score Excellent in her linear classification report. I think 2 females have scored Ex here in Au, I will check that, but nevertheless Petrel is one of very few cows in the world to ...

Re: DCS online herdbook
My first chance to get back to it, thank you to all concerned, all appears to be back to normal now. I always managed OK before but on-line is so easy and time saving.
Thanks Duncan, thanks everbody.
