Although on Council I have heard no discussion on the question of crossing. Like most of the contributors I would deplore any suggestion of using the cross in beef promotion. However, over the years I have sold Dexter bulls for use in dairy herds on first calving heifers to avoid calving problems, ...

I used to be on telephone connection, but it meant I limited access because of the cost. In fact, although I used to confine myself to spending only a few minutes occasionally and ensured my e-mails were ready before I connected to send, it still cost me a lot more than it does today when I will ha...

I cant track it down but the South Africans conducted some comparison trials and established that the shorts would stop laying on meat once the skeleton finished growing which happens at an earlier age than in the long, they then used the feed to lay on fat rather than meat.

Chris - the report is under the heading 'Society News', a bit confusing since the older ones are all under 'Council Matters'

An excellent idea, which I will certainly take forward. I could make use of it myself since I only have them for the period since I joined. I would ask for a bi of patience since council has a lot of backlog to make up, and I would not want to appear to be trying to hog proceedings Beryl (Woodmagic)

My vet tells me that dogs out on a walk with their owners are still suspicious of him. My Dexters always know when you have designs on them. I always try to combine a vet’s visit with their routine trip indoors or I know I am going to have a thoroughly exasperating time trying to round them up. Ber...

I would hesitate to advise on the mixed waste, but I too, have experience of excellent results with potatos. During and just after the war I used the 'blued' potatoes that were an excellent milk maker, and a cheap feed at a time of shortages. Sylvia, the other occasion was unplanned, when some of m...

My cows go out by day with access to cover if they want it, and are shut in at night. They get very bored if they are kept in entirely, and I agree with Saffy, I am sure they are healthier if they get exercise.

In general terms I cannot better Clive’s answer I am on heavy clay and need to bring mine in for the winter, but on an earlier farm with some woodland cover they could winter out. I do have mine in cubicles 5.6” in length including the manger, 2.11" width with a swinging side barrier on a shor...

how can Mr. average compete with people who are prepared to pay crazy prices for quality stock . I suggest Clacko, you go to the average sale where you can compete with average buyers. There are sufficient reports of such sales in the last few days to confirm that. I cannot see the buyers at Knight...
