Stephanie No personal offence was meant but I get sick of hearing the death comment pumped out as if its the law. Some breeds may be less self-reliant than others, but I know of no animal that is hell bent on death, not even lemmings! As for numbers, well obviously I have a different human:sheep ra...

Jonathan We are based in the West Country and have 3 acres. We also have kept Southdowns, so I will give you my opinion based on having done the things you are considering. First point is that it genuinely does depend on your land. Unless you are on Dartmoor with poor grazing you could have good gr...

Thank you Sylvia, Going off on a tangent slightly, after Sylvia's comments I wonder if the 'hips' issue relates at all to short vs. non-short? Last year's calf was a gangly long leg bull at 26kg and came out with three strains, easy. This year was a short leg heifer, we weighed her at 28kg, but she...

Hi everyone We unfortunately lost a calf during labour. Got stuck at the hips and by the time the vet got it out the umbilical had been compressed. Sad. We are now in the process of trying to dry the cow off. She has an enormous taught udder. Any recommendations on drying off strategies, particular...

Thank you Kathy, Elizabeth and Peter Very reassuring information. They are obviously very impressive little cows to withstand Canadian temperatures! I think the key issue is wet. If the coat gets damped down it loses its insulating properties and windchill can be a problem. Peter, i'm interested in...
