Beef Prices

I will be shortly be selling a steer as freezer packs (mixed hind and fore quarter). We normally sell the majority of our steers direct to a butcher and this is the first we have sold this way for a couple of years. Not yet decided what price to charge and was wondering what other breeders/finishers...

Re: Overweight cows

I am wondering if the condition of the cows and the fact they have got fatter and fatter could be down to management of the herd ?. Not sure what size of holding you have and the total number of stock carried, but as you say there is an abundance of grass. As you have cows and calves etc. housed, ma...

Dexter Bull Beef

We recently had slaughtered and butchered a non short 11 month old Dexter bull. We were unable to castrate this animal as only 1 testicle had descended. We would not normally send an animal for slaughter at this age but as he was getting active we felt it was the right choice. The carcass dead weigh...

Hi Mark,

I was under the impression Polly Putney had made a bid of £50 for the book ? On the Dexter facebook page.

Re: Life and Times of Dexters signed by author

Hi all,

I would imagine another bid would take the total to the revised target of £2,000, let’s hope we hit this figure ?

Re: Life and Times of Dexters signed by author

Hi Duncan, Pleased to say I have purchased the book and will send the £100 ASAP. As I already own a signed copy of the book I would like to put the new book (unsigned as yet) back on the site for auction again to raise additional money for the Australian Dexter Society. I suggest the auction closes ...

Re: Life and Times of Dexters signed by author

Hi Mark, Could you please provide more info on the Australian Dexter Cattle Appeal. Australia as we are all aware is being ravaged by bush fires and and the devastation and loss of wildlife caused by this disaster is heartbreaking to see. If the appeal is to help farmers affected I will be more than...

Poor Sale Prices York

Hi Seeing the poor prices attained at the recent York sale and not having seen the cattle on offer, I can only assume the poor prices/averages were due to the quality of stock on offer or a lack of buyers. If this was due to the stock on offer were people using this as a dumping ground to offload in...

Re: Re birth notification

Hi Ann,

I was going to raise this point, I thought the original deadline was 28 days to tie in with the passport application. How many people were refused registration if they were only late by days ?

Re: Is it the end?

Hi Mark, Hope you continue with the Discussion Board, we had a serious issue with Facebook and will not have another account with them, also surprisingly a lot of people do not have access or want access to a Facebook. It does appear to have been quiet of late but the value of the site is that the d...

Male/Female Ratio Calves Born

As all this years calves have been heifers and following a run of mostly heifers in previous years I checked the herd register and found that of the last 20 calves born, 16 were females and 4 were bull calves. Prior to this the ratio was about 50/50. This group of calves were sired by 4 different bu...

Re: Payment for transfer of ownership

I am not in total agreement with Duncan’s comments, he states seller paying the transfer fee may reduce the number of good breeding cattle sold and not registered. In a lot of pedigree breeds of both sheep and cattle there are sales to farmers not members of the relevant breed Society who will have ...

Re: Payment for transfer of ownership

More confusion re payment for transfer of ownership. Contacted last night by Alan Carrington to discuss this issue and to clarify if I had reported it correctly that it is the vendor who is responsible for paying the transfer fee. The reason he was asking the question is that he was issued with a ne...
