Re: Dexter Bull wanted to Hire

Normally, the first thing anyone asks, when wanting to borrow one my bulls, is whether he is registered. Interest in the pedigree usually only extends to the degree of relationship with the cows to be served. I would certainly never use an unregistered bull. I'm the first to agree that registering a...

Re: Bull registration

Well, I've answered my own question. I still haven't received the pedigree certificate for my bull. So, I contacted the office, who contacted the lab in the Netherlands, who say they have never received the samples. Since the samples were sent tracked & signed for, there is proof on Royal Mail websi...

Re: Dexter Bull wanted to Hire

Are you in a TB 4 year testing area?
Rosewood Glenkinchie is currently available, there's a photo of him on the Herd Photos thread.

Re: Bull registration

Veronica Schofield is in DCS office on Tuesdays & deals with mundane jobs like sending out sample bags. Try contacting her directly for advice.

Re: Dexters urgently needing new homes

It would help if there was a herd return in the last DCS Herd Book. There's no info on births in 2017 and one heifer out of a Humberdale female by Padison in 2016.

Early turn out

It's a glorious day here and the ground is dry, so I've turned out 3 dry cows to join the cow and stirks who went out a week ago. Conditions are far better for turn out now than in April last year.
Anyone else taking advantage of the weather?

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter

I'm going off at a tangent here, since Godstone Esmeralda has been invoked. I had Godstone Abby and the attached photos are, in my opinion, a damning indictment of husbandry in the Godstone herd. Abby was sold, in very poor condition, as "run with the bull" at the Stoneleigh RBST sale, where she was...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter

With the greatest respect, as Duncan has pointed out, you have presented no hard evidence that Harley Poll was polled. You have explored an interesting hypothesis but given no irrefutable proof in support. Without this, you are presenting personal speculation, not evidence. Perfectly acceptable, pro...

Re: Harley Poll - 1894 Foundation Dexter

Kirk seems to be playing Devil's Advocate again. At least it will enliven this discussion board. I would raise several points for consideration. Firstly, Poll was used as an abbreviation for Polly, as in Poll/Polly parrot for example. It need not mean polled in the sense of hornless. Secondly the ph...

Bull registration

Currently in the process of registering a young bull. Received forms & sample bags & an addressed envelope to post these direct to the lab in the Netherlands. The covering letter recommended sending this Recorded Delivery. Duly requested this at the Post Office and was somewhat taken aback to find t...

Re: Michael Neilson

This is very sad news indeed, he did seem much better at Carlisle Sale & the AGM. Michael will be sorely missed at the NW shows & sale. Always good to chat to and amenable to "just holding a piece of string" aka leading a heifer in the show ring for me. As Duncan says, he & Carol did much unsung wor...

Re: Bull Beef

I used to do bull beef back in the day of the BSPS subsidy, as one could make one claim on the entire and get them away rather than the two claims for the steers. Bulls certainly finish sooner than steers. At 11 months they are not going to have developed a lot of flavour, that's one criticism I use...

Re: yorkshire post article about dexter herd

delta.jpg Here is Baranduin Delta in 2015. Mr Raw has now borrowed him for a year, with an option on a second year. Mr Raw is a very nice, sensible chap, who understands cattle. Delta has been hired to sire pedigree heifers to expand the breeding herd. This is in response to demand for birth notifi...
